Why Herbs? Herbs for Your Heart Health

Why Herbs and Why see an Herbalist?  Most people are aware that February is “Heart Health Month”, and much attention is given to how to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.  But what about the “spirit heart” – that which aches when we feel love and compassion, or melancholy and depression?  With herbal medicine, which employs a whole body-mind-spirit philosophy, we can address both – and much more.

(Herbs) In the United States, the modern herbalist is still relatively unknown, but growing in acceptance as a valuable health resource for those who desire partnership to help them take charge of their own wellbeing.  The herbalist focuses on supporting wellness as opposed to fighting disease, and is trained to safely combine high quality medicinal plants in therapeutic doses (typically as teas, powders, or hydroalcoholic extracts) synergistically for maximum efficacy.   Perhaps more important, the herbalist is trained to listen deeply, make a whole body (and mind) assessment, and incorporate herbs as part of a comprehensive treatment strategy that also includes diet and lifestyle recommendations.  The herbalist’s role is to empower you to make positive, lasting changes, selecting the appropriate the tools to maximize success.

Why herbs?  The strength of botanicals lies in their capacity to support the body as it finds a healing path. In other words, herbs assist the body by “nudging” it back into balance.   In terms of cardiovascular health, this may mean regulating blood pressure, sugar, or lipids, or improving heart muscle efficiency.  While herbs may sometimes take longer than pharmaceuticals, the benefits are often more lasting because herbs assist in restoring innate physiological function.  That is, they help your body help itself to heal.  Additionally, herbs are generally very safe (when used appropriately) and have low-to-no side effects.
