Wow! How Do They Do That?

Author: admin 17 August 2010 No Comment

Have you ever seen a beautiful picture in a book, magazine or advertisement and ask yourself wow, how did they do that?

Well like any great recipes for success, it takes skill, training, research, practice, patience, and at times a pinch or smidgeon of luck. Let’s face it, anyone can take a picture, but a professional photographer is someone who is or at least I hope is able to inspire a sense of awe, joy, and evoke pure emotion with his or her work.  Great photographs do not just happen. They are crafted.  Learning light manipulation, composition, aperture value, shutter speed, and exposure are just a few of the basics.

The arrival of digital photography, has allowed the most beginner of shutterbugs to enjoy this media. However, without the proper instruction, the results are quite limiting and can be disappointing.  For example: If you purchase a top of the line sports car, but do not know how to shift gears, the fun factor wears off very quickly. The same is true for photography. Even the most basic of cameras can yield great results. The trick is getting to know how to use it. Have you ever taken a picture of family or friends, on a sunny day with blue skies, only to find that your subject has shadows all over their face, and the sky is white? Come on you know you have. Easily corrected, if you know a couple of simple techniques.

How to keep your Friends

I have heard it hundreds of times. Oh, I have a friend who can take the pictures. 9 out of 10 times, the results are not exactly the most favorable.  If you are having a gathering, wedding, reunion,  or special event, wouldn’t you rather have your friend or family member in the photos, rather than taking them? The thing is you can’t really go back to your friend and tell them that they did a lousy job, if the pictures are not to your liking. After all, they were doing you a favor.
