Roots Market Knows Wellness
Hi there! I’m Annie and I am the Director of Wellness at Roots Market. I work with our vendors to bring you the highest quality products in our Body Care and Supplements departments. Our mission at Roots is to bring our customers products that reflect our commitment to serving our community, protecting our planet, and being passionate and proud of the foods we eat and the products we offer. There are many reasons to purchase all natural health and beauty products. Overall, products are produced in smaller batches with simple, high-quality ingredients, and, overwhelmingly, the companies we carry are committed to giving back to their communities and the planet.
Quality
Our favorite vendors are companies that are committed to using non-genetically modified organisms (non-GMO) in their products. Garden of Life, a manufacturer of proteins and vitamins, is committed to sourcing non-GMO ingredients for their raw and whole food-based line of products. We support these companies because they are helping to grow food in its natural state.
During summer months, we all do our best to keep the bugs at bay and our skin protected from UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen choices can be overwhelming, with all of the many varieties and ingredients. A great resource for choosing sunscreen is the Environmental Working Group’s Sunscreen Guide. Each year, the EWG compiles a list of the industry’s best sunscreen options. At Roots, we choose to carry only mineral-based sunscreens and avoid any products containing chemical sunscreens such as oxybenzone. All of our sunscreens are chosen based upon EWG ratings and quality of inactive ingredients.
A summer favorite is Goddess Gardens. Founded by a Boulder, Colorado mom, these products pack an SPF punch using zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as sunscreens. Each formula is created using organic ingredients, minerals, and essential oils.
Fair Trade and Environment
You may have heard the buzz surrounding the words “Fair Trade.” Fair trade standards mean that producers and manufacturers in developing countries are paid a fair price for their labor and their goods. Fair Trade certification also guarantees that no child labor was used in the production of a product except in the cases of family farms where the children are still able to attend school.
Alaffia is a company that has helped to pioneer the Fair Trade movement in body care. With their line of shea butter-based products, they have helped to support numerous women in Togo when they purchase from fair-trade shea butter cooperatives. Alaffia gives back to the community through their support for Bicycles for Education, maternal health initiatives, and environmental stewardship. In addition to their outstanding support of Fair Trade, their products are created using simple, all natural, time-tested ingredients that nourish the hair and skin.
